Chapter Five

“CAM?” HIS FACE CAME into focus, like something from a far off time, another place.

Worry etched itself across his features. “Yes. You looked for a minute there like you didn’t even know me. In fact, I stood watching you for several minutes before I said your name.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I must have gotten carried away.” And even now, she didn’t want to stop dancing. It had been so long…The thought took her aback. Not that long, only a few weeks.

“Earth to Neve. I take it you’re feeling better.” He touched her arm. She hadn’t even noticed him coming to stand next to her.

“Much.” She gave him a bright smile.

He frowned. “It’s just that…” he trailed off.

“Let’s go to your place. I’m looking forward to decorating that tree.” She sat on the couch, unlacing her shoes. A cold sweat made her shiver, and the wetness of her shirt surprised her.

How long was I dancing? She knew by the sweat that it must have been for hours.

“Great. I’m ready to go.”

“Let me just grab a glass of water. I’m dying of thirst.” She moved past him to the sink.

“I’d imagine so. You were really into it. I enjoyed watching you and how easy you made it look.”

“The life of a dancer. Thanks.” She kept her tone light, but questions swirled in her head. After the warm-up and first few moves, she had no idea how she had spent the last couple hours. Gulping the water, she tried to make sense of it all, but she couldn’t. And the dream…

Neve went to the bathroom and ran a brush through her hair and splashed water on her face along with some makeup. She returned to find him staring at the pointe shoes. “Okay, I’m ready.” She gave Cam a bright smile, taking in his gleaming reddish-blond hair. He smiled, ushering her outside. A few snowflakes fell on them.

“December eighteenth. Not long till Christmas now.”

“I know. I’ve always loved the season.” Neve trembled when the cold air hit her damp clothing.

“Me too.” He opened the car door for her, and she shivered in the cold interior.

He got in and started it up. “Anything else happen this afternoon? Get the locks changed?”

“Yep, that’s all done.”

“Glad to hear it. My house is just over this way a few blocks.”

“I had no idea you were so close by!” Neve studied Cam’s strong profile.

“I didn’t want to freak you out.”

“You wouldn’t have. You’ve been here longer than I have.”

He chuckled. “That I have.” A note of something Neve thought might be sadness crept into his voice.

“So you’re a native?”

“Sure am. I was born and raised and married here.” He cleared his throat, and his jaw worked.

Married?

They pulled in front of a cute, white house with lights adorning it.

“Married?”

“Oh, no. She’s…” He didn’t finish the sentence.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. It was a break in. I was out of town. After her death, I changed careers. Business just didn’t hold the same appeal for me anymore.”

“I don’t know what to say.”

“There’s nothing you can say.
